Riddle me this...

In this week's Phoenix, I suggest five burning questions that'll decide who gets the Democratic nomination for governor. Anyone care to suggest an addition or two?

Who will play John Kerry? Kerry was launched in Iowa because with both Gephardt and Dean kicking the living bleep out of each other, he looked like the most electable, and electability was what Democrats were most looking for. Same here. Inspiration? Experience? Give me a warm pulse with a D tattooed on his chest in the corner office and I'm good.

Lisa, I assume you're asking me rather than Melbourne. So: no, I don't. Why do you ask?

I think she's posing a question for the candidates.

For the primary I'm wondering...

Will voter turnout vary much (in quantity or quality) from 2002?

What will labor do?

Will non-white vote increase? If so, who does it go to?

good questions Chris.

The biggest problem with the primary for Democrats is that if it's just the base that turns out, our candidate is sunk, no matter who it is.

If one can only appeal to the base, one is destined to turn off the moderates.

I think the non-white count will stay the same. galvanized and interested non-white populkations already vote, and none of the candidates are doing anything to roll in new minority blocks of voters.

My guess on Labor is that they will roll on with Reilly, that seems to be standard playbook politics here, he's the only one they really know, so he has that incumanbcy-like draw. And they almost always go with Democratic incumbents, don't they? MTA may go differently, that would be my only question mark.

Are we done deciding elections on personal social issues like gay marriage and choice, or will it be a wedge issue, with candidates avoiding real problems such as education, taxes and housing?

I think you nailed it, Adam. Especially Reilly and Deval. It is Deval's supporters who will bring him down. Not Deval. The opposite of John Kerry.

P.S. Adam I am curious to your thoughts on [this topic http://www.bluemassgroup.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=2483]
