Feeney Challenges for Council President

Breaking news, as they say, just broken by the Dorchester Reporter. Maureen Feeney joins John Tobin, whose candidacy I broke in this story, and current Boston City Council president Mike Flaherty vying for the post.

Maybe there's so much competition because of the killer view the council president's office is sure to have in the new waterfront City Hall.

Feeney told the Reporter that she "already had the support of some councillors, but declined to reveal whom."

Feeney would be, amazingly, the first woman to lead the council.

Update: Yes, it would be amazing -- if it were true. But in fact Louise Day Hicks was president of the city council, as I have been reminded.

The Council President should be called on to update Council Rule 34. Sunshine open public meetings principles, FOI Freedom of Information public records principles and open government principles are routinely flouted by council staff. Public enquiries are routinely deflected, for example the uneditied stenographic transcript, the stenographic machine output is kept out of reach of citizens interested, concerned about the Councilors' debate in the public meetings.

A new Council staff director is needed who is more familiar with the technologies to communicate the council activities. The City Clerks office needs staff more familiar with the technologies to better communicate Council what transpires during Council proceedings and Council Committees' proceedings.

David,
Thanks for the reminder about Louise Day Hicks. We erred (my editing mistake) in reporting that Feeney would be the first woman to hold the post.
That has now been corrected online at http://www.dotnews.com
