SOLID FOOTING: Asobi Seksu
|
In the two years since their debut, NYC’s Asobi Seksu have found solid footing for their dreamy, effervescent mixture of coy indie rock and shoegazer noisemaking. Although Citrus allures with its dizzying waves of sound and airy melodies, the band never let those elements become tangential or spiral off into cul-de-sacs of pointless theatrics. “Strawberries” matches singer Yuki Chikudate’s reedy vocals with a tight, metronomic rhythm-section pulse. Chikudate sings in both English and Japanese, and the rest of the band give her plenty of room without reining things in, as in “New Years,” where moments of sparse singing give way to torrents of Kevin Shields–inspired guitar heroics.
