On their third album, NYC mood merchants Interpol don’t quite rest on the laurels of their 2004 major-label debut, Antics. But this isn’t a major departure, either. Paul Banks’s pensive vocals and the anthemic ring of Daniel Kessler’s guitars, supported by Greg Drudy’s stern backbeats, remain signatures of the Interpol sound. Yet in the dark elegance of “No I in Threesome” and “Pioneer to the Falls,” there’s less emphasis on homing in on hooks than on finding the right atmosphere. It’s an approach that demands repeated listenings — “The Heinrich Maneuver” bypasses immediate thrills for the subtler rewards of the subconscious. Attention to the smallest instrumental details and the finest points of every composition have become Interpol trademarks; more complex than its pop song structures might suggest, Our Love To Admire is well worth exploring.
