After realizing they probably knew just as much - if not more - about our changing musical landscape as anyone, Metric released their latest album, Fantasies, themselves. And, of course, it's their most successful album to date, bolstered by massive radio hit "Help, I'm Alive." They're now pretty much the second-most successful band to emerge from the Broken Social Scene collective - doesn't look like anyone's going to knock Feist off the top of that particular mountain anytime soon - and they're playing the WFNX/Boston Phoenix Best Music Poll show this Saturday at City Hall Plaza.

The Pixies are re-reuniting. This means that if you missed them in '04 or '05, you'll have another chance. The downside, though? If you want to hear your favorites from Surfer Rosa, you'll have to hope for an encore, because on this trip through the US, they'll only be playing Doolittle in its entirety.

When I was reading up on Ra Ra Riot in anticipation of this interview,
I was surprised to learn they've only been together since 2006. It
seems like we've been talking about them forever, yet they were never
hyped to the point of oversaturation (like, say, their friends in
Vampire Weekend). That's partly a testament to their ability to their
ability to build a fanbase, something they began in earnest while still
at Syracuse University, but it's also a reflection of just how eventful
their brief career has been.

Ascendant Philadelphian Kurt Vile brought his band, the Violators, to town this past weekend as part of Dan Shea's massive Homegrown Psych Fest at Church. Our own K. Bonami shot some footage, and, as you can see, it was pretty awesome. After watching, you can head over to the Matablog, read about Vile's new album, and download a new track.

Remember when Bradford Cox had that freakout after someone found the rough sketches of the next Atlas Sound album on an unguarded Mediafire account? He threatened to cancel the project - and he maintains now that he was serious. But not only has Cox come out of the drama without his image taking a hit - any hit at all, really; other meltdown-prone artists should be so lucky - he also pressed on with the album, bolstered now by the teachings of Animal Collective's Noah Lennox (a/k/a Panda Bear).

As the video above indicates, the Beastie Boys are taking a bit of a hiatus while Adam "MCA" Yauch undergoes treatment for a cancerous tumor on one of his salivary glands. According to the band, the tumor is considered treatable as it was caught early and is localized. They also say it will not affect Yauch's vocal chords.

Thom Yorke, who unveiled a new song just last week for that Marc Mulcahy tribute, also debuted a new song just yesterday during a solo set at the Latitude Fest in the UK (during which he reportedly also played songs from Eraser and In Rainbows), which he prefaced by suggesting it might be a good time for people to "go for a piss.

From Billboard comes the news:
Later this year, MTV plans to launch a groundbreaking initiative called
the Rock Band Network that will enable any artist-unsigned emerging
act, indie cult fave or major-label superstar-to submit songs for
possible inclusion in the game.
The Rock Band Network recently started a closed beta
trial, which MTV expects to expand to a public beta test in August.

VIDEO: Harry and the Potters do "Platform Nine and Three-Quarters" live in Purgatory Chasm
I've got a flashlight in one hand and a wand in the other. Evening's last light is trickling through hundred-foot trees. There's a stream of us hopping from one boulder to the next, squeezing between caverns, trying to keep our dress robes from dragging on the dirt path.
