It's being reported that Mitt Romney is dropping his presidential bid. That leaves McCain, Huckabee, and Paul -- and Huckabee is an attractive enough candidate that he could cause a few problems for McCain in future states, though not enough to derail his likely nomination.

Sure, he can continue to spend his millions and he's a finalist in a two-and-a-half person race, with Mike Huckabee lingering in the background. But in five direct races since January, he's won one -- Michigan -- where his family name likely carried him to victory.

Romney Wins GOP Michigan Primary

If the trends continue, Mitt Romney will win the Michigan primary tonight by about eight points over John McCain, with Mike Huckabee a distant third.
This obviously revitalizes the Romney campaign and deals a blow to McCain. All three now face a key test this Saturday in South Carolina, with the loser facing real trouble from there on out.

With Thursday looming, here's what could happen in the GOP race to tilt things one way or the other:

Romney: The constant negative attacks keep working and with a superior organization, Romney grinds out a victory, with McCain and Thompson cutting into Huckabee's potential totals.
Huckabee: Many of Huckabee's supporters are evangelical Christians and first-time voters -- under the radar so to speak -- and so they weren't picked up as much by pollsters nor were they swayed by the negative attacks all that much either.

As we've been writing all along, endorsements -- particulary newspaper ones -- scarcely matter any longer. But we're stumped to find many cases in modern history where a mainstream paper went after a mainstream candidate (who wasn't someone like, say, George Wallace) the way the Concord Monitor has gone after Mitt Romney this morning.

Tom Tancredo has withdrawn from the GOP race and endorsed Mitt Romney.
Will it make a difference? Well, Tancredo had virtually no support. So it's hard to see exactly what he thinks he's transferring to Romney.
Endorsements in presidential politics rarely matter. This one is certainly not going to be the exception to the rule.

The key isn't really how this pundit would evaluate the speech: It's how the GOP base views it. For views on that, Real Clear Politics has a collection of opinion. For the record, Pat Buchanan, Rush Limbaugh, Fred Barnes, and a host of other conservatives loved it. Remember that almost 40% of Iowa GOP voters consider themselves evangelicals.

The Significance of the New Des Moines Register Poll That Has Obama and Huckabee Ahead

This morning's latest numbers from the respected Des Moines Register poll, which voters in Iowa pay attention to:

Obama: 28
Clinton: 25
Edwards: 23

Huckabee 29
Romney: 24
Giuliani: 13

The signficance:

-- Romney is in trouble in Iowa. That isn't to say he can't come back but he's going to have to wage a fairly negative campaign to do it, which could hurt him in the long run.

Rasmussen Now Gives Romney A 19-Point Lead in NH

Mitt Romney may be in trouble in Iowa but the word hasn't gotten to NH yet. Rasmussen has Romney with a 19-point lead over John McCain and Rudy Giuliani, 34%-15%, with Mike Huckabee right behind.
The question is whether the lead will hold -- and it is a huge one -- if Romney loses Iowa five days before NH. And, even if he were to win NH after losing Iowa, would the press then write off his victory in the Granite State as a kind of favorite son showing?

The latest Rasmussen poll now has Mike Huckabee ahead of Mitt Romney in Iowa 28%-25%. It's a stunning turnaround and if it holds -- a big "if" -- Mitt's campaign will virtually end the night of the Iowa caucuses.
