The Importance of Today's GOP Debate Has Been Overhyped

Today's GOP debate in Detroit has been hyped by some as "make or break" for Fred Thompson. True, it is his first and the punditry will be watching closely. But because the debate is being held at 4 pm EDT on CNBC, it will likely have a fraction of the audience of other debates. Given that there's been a huge gulf in opinion about Thompson between the pundits (who have largely panned him) and the voters (who so far have pushed him into second place in many polls), that conflict won't be resolved until more voters watch him -- presumably in the next debate later in the month.

According to the Punditocracy (and the Religious Right), Fred Thompson Isn't Cutting It

Fred Thompson continues to receive awful reviews all around, as the latest Evans-Novak Political Report suggests, as well as a well-researched piece in the Politico, detailing how the Religious Right -- which was once begging Thompson to run -- is now disillusioned with their chosen candidate. (Yesterday we wrote about how they don't like Giuliani either -- sounds like they're running out of candidates.

Latest Missouri Matchups Confirm Ohio Poll: The Republicans Are Running Surprisingly Well in Swing States and Edwards Looks Like Most Electable Democrat

Survey USA has followed up its Ohio poll with one in Missouri and it basically confirms the findings there -- with one twist. In this swing state, Rudy Giuliani is actually leading Hillary Clinton 48-45%, while Fred Thompson loses narrowly to Clinton by the identical 48-45%.
For the record, Barack Obama, in contrast, beats Giuliani by three points and John Edwards beats him by five.

In Latest Ohio Poll Matchups, Republicans Do Surprisingly Well

It's not much of an exaggeration to say that as swing state Ohio goes, so goes the nation. So it's a bit of a surprise that as unpopular as the current incumbent appears to be, a new Survey USA poll shows Rudy Giuliani leading Hillary Clinton by a point (48-47) in Ohio and Fred Thompson losing to her by a point (47-48). It's also significant that John Edwards also loses to Giuliani by a point but clobbers Fred Thompson by nine points (43-52) -- which could aid his electability argument.

Did You Know There's A GOP Debate Tonight?

The endless chain of debates continues with the GOP contenders gathering tonight in New Hampshire for Fox News. The big news in the debate is Fred Thompson's refusal to participate. Instead, he cheekily has inserted an ad during the debate and will appear on Leno tonight as he "officially" announces tomorrow.
No one says Thompson has to appear at these forums but the way he's handled this -- as he's handled everything -- is a bit too clever by half.

The Politico breathlessly delivers word that Fred Thompson will announce today that he's officially announcing on September 6.
As one online wag puts it, "It's the announcement of the announcement about the announcement for the announcement."
The man has overstayed his welcome and he hasn't even been welcomed yet.

Quick GOP Debate Wrapup

The Politico's Jonathan Martin was blogging from the Iowa debate, available here. Generally, we agree with the assessment of the Iowa voters who watched the debate with Frank Luntz. Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani again were the class of the field, with Mike Huckabee close behind.
What it all means is that unless the results in the Iowa Straw poll late this week upset the apple cart, Romney, Giuliani, and a Fred Thompson who better be on his game when he finally gets into the race comprise the real contenders at this point.

A New Diageo/Hotline Poll is Very Good News for Giuliani

A Diageo/Hotline from last week has a nugget with very good news for Rudy Giuliani. The poll showed him leading Fred Thompson by only a point -- 20%-19%. But with John McCain out of the race, almost all of the Arizona Senator's support went to Giuliani -- increasing his lead over Thompson to 15 points, 36%-21%.
This could be due to the fact that Thompson is still relatively unknown.

Fred Thompson to Delay Official Entry Until August

There's word that Fred Thompson will delay his official presidential announcement until at least mid-August. It's a good strategic move. While he's essentially done nothing, John McCain has imploded and the other contenders continue to take flak on the campaign trail and diminish themselves in debates. He gets to skip the Iowa August straw poll cattle show, which would have done him no favors.

Well That Was Fast: Fred Thompson Leads GOP Field in Latest Rasmussen Poll

Fred Thompson hasn't even formally announced and already Rasmussen has him leading Rudy Giuliani by a point in the newest Rasmussen poll.
It's obviously good news for Thompson, who's likely to find that the most popular thing to be in presidential politics is a candidate getting ready to run, as opposed to actually running.

Fred Thompson to Formally Enter Race in July

The Politico is reporting this morning that Fred Thompson will officially become a presidential candidate over the July 4th holiday. His entry will obviously have a profound effect on the GOP race -- an effect that, ironically, is the subject of this week's Tote Board column, written before today but out tomorrow.
