- Menace and wit
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, though certainly not in that order.
- Cries and whispers
Mental illness is a touchy subject, one that needs to be handled sensitively on stage or not at all.
- Power play(1)
At this time of renewed political idealism in the country, director Judith Swift has labeled the London setting of An Ideal Husband , at the Gamm through December 7, as "inspired by the 19th century, set in the 20th century, reflected in the 21st century."
- Encore!
Oh, what a jaded bunch of seat-warmers we can become, those of us who see a lot of theater — good theater, that is. But now and then we encounter a production or a performance that reminds us of what we knew all along.
- Talking ’bout a revolution
It takes a theatrical genius like Tom Stoppard to come up with Rock ’n’ Roll, which merges the pulsing spirit of both until they feel like one. And it takes a theater of the caliber of the Gamm to make history feel like a Stones concert that becomes a political rally.
- Tongue untied
Robert Frost, loving his little rhymes, once compared writing free verse to playing tennis without a net. Playwright David Hirson might very well enjoy swinging a racket in shackles, considering the fun he’s had composing La Bête entirely in rhymed couplets.
- The play's the thing
The Gamm has come a long way since its 1984 birth as Alias Stage in a derelict Olneyville mill building.
- Parlor games
The 19th-century practice of the lesbian “Boston marriage” was packed with enough human urgency and necessary social hypocrisy to supply any number of plays.
- The torment within
In dramatic terms, it doesn't really matter whether the female protagonist of 4:48 Psychosis commits suicide at the end of the play.
- New + old classics
As if freshly presenting stage classics isn’t challenging enough, new adaptations are in the lineups this fall at two companies, Trinity Repertory Company and the Gamm.
- Both new and old classics
The Gamm certainly has come a long way in the quarter-century leading up to this its 25th anniversary season. The evolution of its name alone is quite a trip.
