State should protect inmates’ rights
Letters to the Portland Editor, October 16, 2009
As Lance Tapley points out, denying prisoners access to human-rights protections is a mistake (see "Less Than Equal," October 2).

Moderation and Elephants
Letters to the Portland editor, September 25, 2009
I appreciate Deirdre Fulton's nuanced reflection on moderates Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins (see "We Told You So," September 18) except that she fails to note the elephant in the picture.

Time for law to end torture
Letters to the Portland Editor, September 18, 2009
In a collaborative effort between human-rights activists and incarcerated Mainers, a bill to end the use and abuse of solitary confinement has been drafted and will be submitted to legislators soon.

Prison activist: Board chairman wrong
Letters to the Portland Editor, September 11, 2009
I just finished reading the letter from Jon Wilson. Mr. Tapley was correct, the Board of Visitors is not living up to its mandate to represent the public's concerns about the Maine State Prison, nor is it minimally accountable in that it never filed an annual report until provoked by the scrutiny of Mr. Tapley's investigative journalism.

Article aided big oil
Letters to the Portland Editor, September 4, 2009
Nothing helps big oil, and big coal, more than a piece like "What's Wrong With Wind Power?" (by Deirdre Fulton, August 21).

Letters to the Portland Editor
The venting of wind-power skeptics in the Phoenix piece " What's Wrong With Wind Power " (by Deirdre Fulton, August 21) really misses a major point — global warming. When we finally get down to grappling with dangerous climate disruption all forms of non-carbon emitting power will rise.

Letters to the editor
Regarding Lance Tapley's latest effort on the Maine State Prison Board of Visitors (see "Secret, Unaccountable, and Co-opted," August 14), what he sometimes refers to as advocacy journalism might be more appropriately termed agenda journalism.

Dump gay marriage and regroup!
A recent EqualityMaine campaign letter claimed that gay marriage is "the fight for our lives." I wonder whose lives they are talking about, when AIDS service organizations and community health/reproductive clinics across the state have been tightening their belts and desperately trying to crunch numbers.

Commodity leads to scarcity
I've never seen Al Diamon quite so hysterical as in his column on the water issue. Nazi analogies of the Left are simply the Ann Coulter form of crazy, especially when you are defending corporations.

The April 22 hearing on marriage equality at the Augusta Civic Center was historic, important, and, on balance, a wonderful thing.

Include everyone
Letters to the Portland editor, April 17, 2009
"Voting Frights" (by Shay Stewart-Bouley, April 3) is xenophobia dressed up to look nice. The assertion that people who are not full citizens are disproportionally less likely to have "learned what is going on" is without factual basis.

Truth is — it is a great time to jump into real estate and purchase a home.
It was refreshing to read an article ("Hope For Young Homebuyers," by Deirdre Fulton) that portrays what truly is happening with today's real-estate market.
