The soups were less satisfying than the sandwiches. The chicken had one piece of meat and mostly celery slices; the chowder was "heavy on the potatoes," Bill reported. The sandwiches, however, were delicious. Mine had sliced, house-roasted turkey, Swiss, Thousand Island dressing, and house-made cole slaw, grilled between two large slices of country white, served with house-made potato chips — a real treat.

The burger club was two kebab-like structures of hand-pressed burger, generous bacon slices, lettuce, tomato, and marbled rye bread, in repeating layers, with a side of slaw. The club was tricky to eat but worth the trouble, Bill concluded.

Desserts: occasionally, fruit pies or bread puddings. But there's always the yummy-sounding ice cream floats and cabinets, with Yacht Club sodas and Eclipse and Autocrat syrups. Local products are a plus, and the ice cream treats are so in the diner mode — a good break from seasonal shopping.
