Review: The Square Peg

By BILL RODRIGUEZ  |  January 8, 2013

He also found my crumb-topped mac 'n' cheese ($7) on the bland side, though I thought that was partly from it being undersalted, heart health concerns being what they are at some restaurants. I promptly corrected that with a few shakes. But it really could have used a zippier cheese in the blend than cheddar and American.

I also ordered the meatballs ($7.50), expecting an ordinary experience, but was quite pleasantly surprised. The four fat fellas were spiced up with a little heat, just enough to catch my taste buds' attention. They are also available in a potato roll sandwich ($8).

Amy says that larger special entrees didn't go over too well as evening specials for bigger appetites when they opened in November. But a special we had, cioppino ($10), fit that bill, shell-on littlenecks and other seafood swimming deliciously in a spicy broth.

The hit of the meal? The moist and wonderful carrot cake ($4.50), hands down. After a taste, the three of us each order a slice. Even a limited menu can have unlimited surprises.

Some people are brittle and dry as tinder, but they don't have the sense to not play with matches. The two women at the dangerous center of Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane could blaze up at any moment, and we know that one or both will by the end. Each is filled with so much pent-up hatred that spontaneous combustion seems a distinct possibility.

Taking place on the hot Louisiana Gulf Coast, Tennessee Williams's The Rose Tattoo is steamy in more than one way, as human passions boil off repressed emotions.
