BIRD MICROPHONE/CURSILLISTAS SPLIT CD-R/CASSETTE, PAPER MINES The two three-inch CDs come in a hand-sewn canvas wallet, juxtaposing Cursillistas’ dissonant, melodic chamber-folk with the deep breaths and icy command of Bird Microphone’s staccato, kitchen-sink ambience.
WHITE LIGHT, FOR YOUR LEAVES Phoenix freelancer Ian Paige’s new “and Friends” project, it’s a sepia-toned display of Paige’s considerable gift for ideal pop hooks (last seen with Certain Numbers), nuzzled in pillows of ambience and gentle psychedelia. The album is a five-inch CD packaged in forest-green cardstock with a hand-stamped white leaf; the package contains a leaf and a handwritten note.
LIGHTNING STRIKE LIGHTNING, TURN MYSELF INTO THE OCEAN Available as a single CD-R or a double three-inch CD set, an epic set of drony yelps and basement percussion whose careful layering and banjo riffs call to mind a devoutly experimental Grizzly Bear.
BAD BUS, #1 & #3 (CAUCUS) Two cassettes of nearly untouched live material from one of our largest experimental collectives, often sounding sort of like a boxing match (in the balletic sense) where the two fighters are wearing home electronics for gloves and tambourines on their ankles with an angry crowd of onlookers.
BARRY BURST, GORA Citadel’s frontman takes his sitar out for a glorious walk in the Indian desert. Packaged as three-inch or five-inch CD on a Velcro-clasped, tri-folded, watercolored Indian straw paper, each containing a unique photograph.
TEMPERA, TBA Not available at press time, this is the debut cassette from the band responsible for some of the coolest fliers in town. Early word had it that this would be packaged as a blossoming lotus flower, but last I heard it might be a papier-mâché monster with the cassette literally in the belly of the beast.
FRIENDS OF THE FAMILY Brown Bird will perform with the L'Animaux Tryst artists.
