Stick It
Haley Graham (Missy Peregrym resembling a cute, female version of Ashton Kutcher) is a contemptuous punk-rock rebel whose extreme sports derring-do would catch the eye of Tony Hawk. Her sass-itude takes a hit, though, when a court order sends her to a gymnastics boot camp. There Haley gets into it with the catty Olympic hopefuls and their disciplinarian coach (an understated Jeff Bridges). Turns out, she was once on the fast track to the Olympics and choked; a contributing factor might have been her none too envious home life. Writer/director Jessica Bendinger, who covered such seemingly formulaic territory with
Bring It On
, again spins the trite into something more, infusing it with grrrl power and meaningful life lessons. The tenuous yet burgeoning bond between tarnished star and hack mentor (borrowing from
Million Dollar Baby
?) endears, and the colorful array (ditzy to bitchy) of balance-beam divas makes the film worth sticking out.

Made to order
For a 16-year-old “recovering band geek” who has just had, by her own description, the best night of her entire life, Alexa Fay is slightly hysterical.
What Happens in Vegas
Despite its aching predictability, Kutcher’s clunkiness, and Tom Vaughan’s jerky direction, the film and the couple actually grow on you — mostly thanks to Diaz.
The pile-up
No longer is there an off-season or even a chance to catch our breath after the fall deluge.
Stockholm calling
In “Young Folks,” the hipster hit by the Stockholm-based indie-pop trio Peter Bjorn and John, Peter Morén boasts that “we don’t care about the young folks.”
Field Music
Field Music frontman Peter Brewis loves a good pop song as much as the next chap.

Mary Weiss
“I don’t write hits,” sings Mary Weiss on her first — at 58 — solo album.
Justify my love
Oh, Justin. Even you know that your undeniable charisma and brilliantly executed choreography somehow balance out your post-boy-band status and lack of indie cred. Justin Timberlake on Saturday Night Live, "Dick in a Box" (YouTube)
Lords of acid rock
At both shows Earl Greyhound have played in the Boston area to date — upstairs at the Middle East (to which they return this Tuesday) in early October and outdoors in Harvard Square for Oktoberfest a week later — people laughed. Earl Greyhound, "All Better Now" (mp3)
The Exploding Hearts
At its best, power pop is the only guitar-heavy music that defies gravity.

Dan Lindsay and T. J. Martin's Oscar-winning documentary about an underequipped high-school football team competing against big-time programs across Tennessee offers a potent contemplation on race and opportunity.
REVIEW: DR. SEUSS' THE LORAX
| March 01, 2012
Regrettably, this team loses a lot of Seuss's quirkiness, though not the message about corporate greed and slash-and-burn imperialism.
