JANE EYREIt's been a career year for Michael Fassbender with his performances in Shame and A Dangerous Method. But his portrayal of Charlotte Brontë's Rochester, a dour man of refinement smoldering with rage, guilt, and desire, gets my vote. Mia Wasikowska in the title role holds her own as the determined, proper, and equally passionate governess for whom dignity is as important as love. In his second feature, Cary Fukunaga demonstrates a master's skill in adapting this much-filmed classic, wringing tears anew from its exquisite melodrama.
