"A lot of my job as a film director is not dissimilar to that of a historian," Sachs says, "to document with great detail and some amount of understanding how people live in my time. In this film I tried to get the details right for these two men in New York in a way that I haven't seen. I set out to make a film that in some ways is about shame and about what is hidden from other people in intimate relationships, and I really wanted to do that shamelessly."
