The Covenant

An unbewitching brew

I bet you didn’t know this (it’s a well kept secret, hence the title), but at a prestigious prep school on the North Shore (the film was shot in Quebec), scions of Salem warlocks use their sorcery to expose babes’ bottoms, repair cars, get into Harvard, and perpetrate even more devious deeds. At this fictitious boarding school, they’re known as the “Sons of Ipswich.” “Sounds like a boy band,” quips Sarah (Laura Ramsey), a blonde who just transferred in from Boston Public. The new boy, Chase Collins (Sebastian Stan), also ingratiates himself with Caleb Danvers (a pouty Steven Strait) and his mates. It’s all fun and T&A games until a bonfire bash yields a corpse. Ripples in the warlock balance of power and other supernatural mumbo-jumbo percolate, but, the wicked truth be told, everyone looks like the same chiseled Abercrombie & Fitch cutout and you can’t tell who’s who. Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger) directs this unbewitching brew of clichés.

There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.

For 50 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks have been driving parents nuts with their helium-infused banter and shrill bastardizations of pop music.

If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
