Night at the Museum

Matinee worthy, but not a dime more

“This is not worth $11.50 an hour,” blurts exasperated dreamer Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) when his night-watchman job at New York’s Museum of Natural History takes on a life of its own. Neither is this latest from director Shawn Levy (the Cheaper by the Dozen and Pink Panther remakes) worth $10 for two hours. But $6 for a matinee? Sure — and take the kids. While you’re adding up the debatable entertainment value of watching Stiller interact yet again with pal Owen Wilson (as a miniature diorama cowboy come to life), the young ones (and the young at heart) will roar with approval as “history comes alive,” animating t-rex remains, a Capuchin monkey, Attila the Hun, and whatever’s left of Robin Williams’s career (though he’s less animated than usual as a waxen replica of museum benefactor Teddy Roosevelt) as night falls. Plus, the monkey repeatedly slaps Stiller in a family-friendly, fluid-free flip side of an infamous There’s Something About Mary scene.

What promises to be a modern Jules and Jim (until you realize it's directed by a 43-year-old who calls himself "McG") quickly devolves into Spy vs. Spy territory, only with incompetently staged and edited action and little of that ol' Mad magazine zing.

Made for a modest budget of $17 million — and feeling like it (who needs convincing explosions in an action movie?), Dante Lam's latest still gets the job done from a run-and-gun standpoint.

Many a teleplay for The Twilight Zone threatened atomic Armageddon, and though Frontier(s) director Xavier Gens nukes New York in the opening shots of his latest thriller, he finds more inspiration in the horrors of human nature as seen in the old TV show's episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."

Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) returns to the screen in dramatic fashion as new teammate Jane (Paula Patton) and the returning Benji (Simon Pegg) break him out of a Russian prison.
