THE KINGDOM: Revenge is sweet, and codas are hypocritical.
Revenge has taken over the screen lately. Since it’s cool for Jodie Foster to turn vigilante in tamed-down New York City, shouldn’t we kick some ass in the country that contributed most of the 9/11 hijackers? In
The Kingdom
, a bin Laden–ish jihad outfit has massacred a hundred Americans in Saudi Arabia, among them an FBI agent. His pals (Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper,
et al.
) want payback, so they finesse the red tape and head for Riyadh, where they must work with a Saudi counterpart (a terrific Ashraf Barhom). He’s by-the-book, but he sees the light and sidesteps the obstructionism of his compromised superiors. So let the carnage begin! Soon the Saudi body count has exceeded the American, and by the time agent Mayes (Jennifer Garner) has her way with a commando knife, revenge is sweet. Or is it? Director Peter Berg tacks on a hypocritical coda, but you know his heart is in the mayhem.

Followers of the increasingly crowded tween-rock scene had much to look forward to when Lindsay Lohan issued Speak (Casablanca), her debut album, 13 months ago.
October lite
We expected the vampires, the werewolves, the zombies, and the homicidal maniacs. Same thing with the android doubles, the alien abductors, the sexually abused pregnant teenager, the Apocalypse, and the post-Apocalypse. But kids' movies?

Maybe Sam Mendes’s upcoming adaptation of Richard Yates’s Revolutionary Road will offer a more genuine look at the moral and cultural battleground of this period.
Catch and Release
Of all the characters in Susannah Grant’s punishing romantic comedy, Grady, the former fiancé of Gray (Jennifer Garner), has the least to complain about: he’s dead. Watch the trailer for Catch and Release (QuickTime)
Review: Valentine’s Day
I hate Valentine's Day . Not the holiday — that's okay. I mean the movie by that purveyor of grotesque sentiment and smarmy comedy, Garry Marshall.

Lebanese director Nadine Labaki's whimsical film about internecine slaughter has a tone problem from the very start: a group of widows engage in a goofy line dance while the voiceover narrator bewails the death toll of religious warfare.

REVIEW: THE DICTATOR

Though his PR campaign might suggest otherwise, Sacha Baron Cohen has actually made (with director Larry Charles) a sweet movie, not unlike Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator , if less sentimental.
REVIEW: THE HUNTER
| May 17, 2012
Apparently extinct since the 1930s, the Tasmanian Tiger resembled an uncanny assortment of mismatched parts from other animals. Daniel Nettheim's film is equally weird and motley.
