Would one of Wall Street’s wealthiest young scions (Hayden Christensen) choose to have his faulty ticker replaced by a surgeon (Terrence Howard) with four pending malpractice suits? And would he have the procedure done just hours after defying his mother (Lena Olin) by marrying his bridge-and-tunnel girlfriend (Jessica Alba), who stands to inherit millions? If the Lifetime set-up here is ridiculous, the OR conspiracy that follows is even more preposterous. It’s too bad, because the legitimate medical phenomenon explored by writer/director Joby Harold, in which patients remain conscious during surgery, is easily as terrifying as the open-heart close-ups. Best moment? When the reliably wooden Christensen (still making Canadians look bad) asks the equally incompetent Alba, “Do you think my new heart will love you as much as my old one?”

Science and fiction
It wasn’t all hyperventilation.
Jumper
Life and this movie are too short to have to put up with the little shit.
The Eye
“I see . . . ,” says formerly blind concert violinist Sydney Wells (Jessica Alba, not believable as a musician even while visionless).
Primary concerns
The last thing people are looking for when they go to the movies is a reminder of the political crapola they are trying to escape.

The girls of summer
It’s summer, so no one’s surprised at the onslaught of sequels, adaptations, or even movies based on toys. But films with Oscar-caliber women’s roles?
Pride
Predictable and rickety, yet heartfelt, Pride dips into the rage of civil rights.
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Even as a 10-year-old Marvel Comics fan, I knew that the Silver Surfer was a dumb character.
Spring brakes
Funny how spring movies can mirror the options of spring break.
The Brave One
The Brave One is director Neil Jordan’s attempt at a thinking man’s vigilante flick.
Good Luck Chuck
The only plausible scenario in this movie is the idea that a woman would be so annoyed by Dane Cook, she’d be willing to put a curse on him.
