OH MY GOD: Ice Cube robs a church.
You’ve got to be a serious screw-up or devastated by desperation to rob a church. In
First Sunday
, Tracy Morgan, reprising the petulant overgrown-child shtick he does so well on
30 Rock
, plays the former and Ice Cube, as a dad in need of $17,000 to save his son’s mother from moving the boy to Atlanta, is the latter. Together, they plot to abscond with cash that a ghetto congregation has raised to save its house of worship. Some of the antic sequences mix awkwardly with moments of sadness, and the interplay between Cube, all snarls, and Morgan, the cause of most of the snarls, is weak. But writer/director David E. Talbert, who’s made a name for himself in the urban-theater scene, tells an entertaining story with an appealing supporting cast plus the uplifting message that crime doesn’t pay — unless (spoiler!) you rob a church full of forgiving parishioners.

Review: G-Force
A hero named Darwin and a convoluted plot about "global extermination" are the first clues that director Hoyt Yeatman isn't taking the cute route with his cast of animated guinea pigs.
Mick and more
Everyone’s coming out of the woodwork this season. Ted Danson, Calista Flockhart, John Lithgow, and Amanda Peet are among the actors prepping for an effusive back-to-TV homecoming, and even Mick Jagger will be on screen.
Review: Death at a Funeral
Once the enfant terrible of misogynistic movies (see 1997’s In the Company of Men ), Neil LaBute has moved on to remakes. His take on a 1973 horror classic ( The Wicker Man ) is either classically horrible or classically brilliant.
Hoop nightmare
It wasn’t quite the world-shattering, where-were-you-when moment as the space shuttle Challenger exploding into cottony plumes earlier that year. But I still remember my naive and dazed disbelief upon hearing that basketball star Len Bias had died of a cocaine overdose on June 19, 1986
Thursday night live
Tina Fey, ex-head writer of Saturday Night Live , has created a sitcom that takes viewers behind-the-scenes of a SNL -style sketch comedy show. And turns out her show is funnier than the real thing.

Hollywood slums with the lower classes in Brad Silbering’s charming two-person trifle, and the result is not as coy and condescending as it could have been.
Random forecast
One thing that’s sure to happen in the coming year is that people will make erroneous predictions about what will happen in the coming year.

I'm hard-pressed to say, though, whether Extract is a significant leap forward for Judge in terms of story or just not as funny as his earlier work.
SOUL MEN

Mac especially is a joy to watch, and a counterpoint to the humor elsewhere, as he breaks out Temptations-style moves with just the right mix of sly fun and respect for the music.
FILTH AND WISDOM

As the lead character narrates his “filthy” story, and those of his London flatmates/neighbors, we hit upon boredom long before wisdom can arrive.
CITY OF EMBER

Kids who see the truth when adults cannot is a central idea in children’s stories, but today’s kids would hardly recognize the grown-ups in Ember’s totalitarian society.
