Although he enjoyed the patronage of King Charles II (John Malkovich) and the respect of the London theatrical world, the Restoration author John Wilmot (Johnny Depp) was better known for “the emptying of bottles and the filling of wenches.” In Laurence Dunmore’s unforgiving portrait of the artist as an expiring hedonist, Wilmot’s contempt and self-loathing alienate him from his circle and cause him to squander his writing gifts. Exiled for writing a semi-pornographic play, he dies a syphilitic alcoholic, his face covered with disgusting scars.
The Libertine
is hardly a great movie; Wilmot’s decline is overlong, and there are too many subplots and a silly epilogue in which the dead poet asks us whether we like him. But Depp’s complex presentation of “a man who pretends to like life more than he does” is unassailable, and so is Samantha Morton’s as the actress Elizabeth Barry, his would-be Galatea.

Politics as usual?
Conspiracy, corruption, catastrophe — politics and world events sure can be exciting. Even the mainstream news is taking an interest.

Epic Movie
Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the brain warp behind the Scary Movie franchise and Date Movie , again take their tired and not-so-true formula and spoof a list of semi-recent theater fillers).
Art for art's sake
Apparently, I'm one of those artist-types. Except it's not called "artist" anymore. That term is too, well ... artsy-fartsy. It doesn't adequately convey my critical importance to society.
Potter-schmotter!

The Oscars go to Hell
Maybe it’s just as well if the writers’ strike forces a cancellation of the Oscars show.

Reality bites again
At the tail end of February, for the second consecutive year, I (barely) escaped a late-winter hurricane to enter a Midwestern oasis of grass-fed beef, cheap cigarettes, Johnny Depp impersonators, and some of the finest documentaries you might just see this year.
Review: Public Enemies
The gangster movie ruled Depression-era cinema — and that might be cause for concern about our present economic difficulties should the genre make a comeback.
Close shave
If it weren’t for his beloved turn as Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Johnny Depp would best be known as the cinematic alter ego of Tim Burton.
