Our third short-film festival crowns all new winners

A new crop of local entrants, including a professional filmmaker, won awards at the third annual Portland Phoenix Maine Short Film Festival, which turned out to be the most competitive ever ... and the most fun!

The awards ceremony and screening at One Longfellow Square this past Thursday were packed, but if you missed them — or if you just want to relive the experience — we've highlighted the winners below. Some of these directors have work showing on television (on Portland Community Television, and even the History Channel); keep your eyes peeled for the others to make their appearances any day now. Camera crazy
With a large number of new entrants, and several returning filmmakers, the fourth annual Portland Phoenix Maine Short Film Festival was a rousing success.

As with Best Picture, the themes of death, aging, and difficult love dominate the two Shorts Oscar categories this year.

If the Rhode Island International Film Festival were a monster movie, it would be something like The Blob That Engulfed Delaware . Like its dozen predecessors, the 13th annual event will be taking over the state.

As OccupyMaine's request to stay in Lincoln Park is considered by a Maine judge, it appears the Portland City Council's decisions (which the judge is reviewing) were based more on individual councilors' views and less on constituent complaints than elected officials have let on.
