On 2003’s
Glamoured
, a decade after shaking up ideas about jazz vocal records and repertoire with producer Craig Street and guitarist Brandon Ross on
Blue Light til Dawn
(Blue Note), Cassandra Wilson seemed to have settled into a steady state of artful, loose-tempo, dreamy jazz pop. Which is why it’s so refreshing to hear her singing over actual grooves on
Thunderbird
. New producer T-Bone Burnett combines the rootsy elements that have become part of her musical identity with contemporary trip-hoppy production. So the standout tracks — “Going to Mexico,” with its Wild Tchoupitoulas “Hey Pocky A-Way” sample, and “It Would Be So Easy,” with its ticka-ticka keyboard and guitar figures — groove, giving a flexible spine to Wilson’s mile-wide alto and free-flowing delivery. On dependable ancient blues like “Easy Rider” and Willie Dixon’s “I Want To Be Loved,” Burnett isn’t afraid to lay on the slide guitar and a rock beat. It’s deliberate but unfussy production, especially effective when the beats clear for some acoustic jazz piano chords and Wilson sings, “You know, the man I love/He must be out of town.” Reginald Veal’s bass playing underscores the jazz sensibility throughout. After a couple of listens, I even got to like Wilson’s “Red River Valley.”

Sense in the sound
In Stephen Sondheim’s old formulation, opera is about music and musical theater is about words.
Year in Jazz: Playing for keeps
Next steps
There’s a perverse, painful pleasure in recalling a particular New York Times Magazine essay by David Hajdu back in December 2000.
John Mellencamp | Life Death Love and Freedom
The arrangements are sparse compared with those of Mellencamp’s pop hits — many don’t even allow drums — but they’re rich with textural detail.
Elvis Costello | Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
There are few genres into which Elvis Costello hasn't delved over the years, but he's always seemed particularly comfortable within the traditional back-porch country that occupies this latest session.
Live To Tell
Two-thousand-six was a black year for blues.
B.B. King
This is his best since his 2000 collaboration with Eric Clapton, Riding with the King .
Marc Ribot
If you know Ribot only through his brilliant sidemanning with Burnett and Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, you don’t really know Ribot.
The talk of the town
With the Boston Globe Jazz & Blues Festival defunct and no other significant local jazz fest in sight, the Beantown Jazz Festival has been stepping up to fill the void.
Fully loaded
One of the most hotly anticipated concerts of the season will be JOSHUA REDMAN's "Double Trio" concert at Berklee on January 22.
