The second CD from this uncloseted teenage Russian duo has more songs that work than their 2002 debut and — unlike
200 km/h in the Wrong Lane
(Interscope) — hardly any that don’t. The first album featured “All the Things That She Said,” as infectious a girl-group song as anyone has made in the past 25 years. This CD, however, offers many more such. “All About Us,” “Friend or Foe,” “Craving (I Only Want What I Can’t Have),” “Perfect Enemy,” and the cocky, cool title track all shoot straight to the gut — and to the heart. These gals finally know why they’re here and what they’re about: not to pretend at lesbianism but to push the edges any way they can. It helps that they sing with obvious relish but never to excess. They still owe much to the recent work of Mylene Farmer, particularly her songwriting for Corsican teen-queen Alizee, but the borrowings aren’t as crude as on
200 km/h
, and they’re more fully woven into t.A.T.u.’s own sound. They also sing in Russian. But even without a translator, the mid-tempo ballads “Obezyanka Noi” and “Gomenasal” convey an obvious joy and gusto.

As I write this, I’m listening to the newest Jeanne Mas CD, The Missing Flowers .
Offer Nissim
Nissim’s style is techno, brash and buzz-sawing, loud and yet melodic, even endearing, thanks to soulful, Euro-style vocals by Maya, one of Israel’s premier pop singers.
Kula Shaker
Paisley drips from the notes these British neo-transcendentalists wring from the instruments on their third album, which ends a six-year hiatus.
Coh
As its title suggests, this latest release by Russian-born musician Ivan Pavlov is all about strings.
Tried and true
In a year when every outfit from Smashing Pumpkins to the Police is reuniting, it can be hard to convince people that you never broke up.

Progressive party
The five members of Fluttr Effect are seated with me on folding chairs in a circle, so anybody walking into the warehouse-like back room of the Berklee College of Music practice space in Allston might assume there’s some kind of rock-and-roll therapy session or AA meeting in progress. It’s a tug-of-war for Damon Gough between the intimate and the epic. Badly Drawn Boy player

Zombi’s unwavering momentum has as much to do with house or electro as with heavy metal. Zombi, "Surface to Air Part I" (mp3)

I didn’t really get the Campaign for Real-Time until some time after my lengthy interview with the band. Campaign for Real-Time, "In Your Dreams" (mp3)
