Ladies' night

'Pure,' downstairs at the Roxy, March 9, 2007

I tiptoe down Warrenton Street to number 75, the back-alley entrance to the monstrosity housed underneath the Roxy, formerly Matrix, now home to “Pure” Friday nights. I gasp in delight when there’s no line, something I almost always have to deal with at my usual Friday-night club. I hear Justin Timberlake crooning, “I’m bringing sexy back . . . ” — a fitting choice by Kiss 108 DJ Rich. The song greets my ready hips as I descend into the throbbing room. Five bucks and I’m in.

Inside, gorgeous pieces of white linen have been draped from each corner of the room’s 20-foot ceiling. Approaching the brightly lit bar closest to the entrance and scanning the crowd, I see backward ballcaps, cleavage, carpenter pants. Check. Tight T’s, loose Polos, spaghetti straps. Check. Short spiky cuts, long straightened coifs, stilettos. Check, check, and check. We are all here. Just watching the look of awe spread across the face of each woman who enters opening night of the newest ladies’ night in town is a breath of super-oxygenated air.

“Pure” is the brainchild of Wendy Kelly and her team, who also promote “Tribe” on Thursday nights at Felt. Is she trying to compete with Toast in Union Square, the other big Friday-night option for ladies? “My focus is on providing options for the women in Boston. Plus, there are more than enough women to make both nights successful. Look at Thursdays. There’s ‘Tribe,’ the Embassy/Modern, Midway . . . all seem to do well.”

So what’s Kelly’s assessment of opening night? “We thought four bartenders would be enough, but next week there will be five.” If anywhere near the 500 or so women who showed up for opening night are planning to be regulars, then she’s right: “Pure” will need five bartenders.
