Dominic and the Lucid

Music seen at the White Heart, August 11

I’m going to call it August Syndrome. It’s apparently hard during these dog days to get a crowd through the club doors, even a free, air-conditioned show at The White Heart. So maybe a lot of people will have to wait until September cures this mysterious affliction before they can see Dominic and the Lucid.

Dominic Lavoie walked away with a Phoenix BiMPie for Best Male Vocalist this year for good reason. In fact, his dramatic, crystal-clear wails and perfect harmonies with drummer Chuck Gagne might be the best part of the band. The benign melodies are ideal for live shows where the varying tones and textures of Lavoie’s guitar and Nate Cyr’s bass are turned way up in contrast. On their 2006 record, Waging the Wage, an unhealthy helping of compression and reverb weigh down songs written by Lavoie to take off into the stratosphere. It only points to how much energy the band can deliver while on stage.

Not to say that you couldn’t take these guys home to Mom. They’re pretty and smiling and singing about love, even when they’re loud. It’s most striking that they always choose a time change or inventive song structure when most bar-friendly bands would just ride on a jam.

If you’re up on your August Syndrome vaccinations, then check out the group this Sunday at the Big Easy along with Are You a Fox? at the Jaeger Wells CD-release party. Fall should bring not only a resurgence of crowds, but a new album by the band as well.
