SUPERBAD: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

Stars
Teen movies have long used the funkiest black music to throw into relief the shenanigans of the nerdiest white guys. But for the
Superbad
soundtrack, Lyle Workman, proving himself as smart as the movie he’s scoring, assembled a line-up that includes revered P-Funk alums Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell and James Brown vets Clyde Stubblefield and John Sparks. The result is the most purely pleasurable straight funk album in years. Although it’s frequently hilarious, with Bootsy’s interjected paeans to the movie’s über-nerd/would-be stud McLovin, Workman plays it straight, treating the music as neither pastiche nor parody, and creating jams that can stand alongside the tracks from the Bar-Kays, Curtis Mayfield, Jean Knight (whose “Do Me” proves that “Mr. Big Stuff” wasn’t all she had in her), and others. The roast-without-the-gravy titles only emphasize the flash and feeling of the music — how can anything so fierce be called “Seth Pulls into Lot”?
"Wise asses: some words with the class clowns of Superbad." By Chris Braiotta.
"Comic relief: Superbad respects teens and comedy." By Chris Braiotta.

Are you Superbad?
VIDEO: An interview with Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse
Wise asses
With all the star power being trotted out in this summer’s would-be blockbuster comedies, how likely was it that the best would be Superbad ?
Right to choose
“For all of us to have our own opinion, this is what I want. It’s not like telling people what to do.”
Brief fling
Carole Lombard rose to stardom in 1934 and was dead by 1942, killed in a plane crash on her way back from selling war bonds; her last picture, Ernst Lubitsch’s To Be or Not To Be , was released posthumously.
Rock and roles
A good number of the jokes in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story are available for your amusement right now, well ahead of the film’s December 21 theatrical-release date.
Bride and prejudice
Noah Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale marked him as the reigning bard of disaffected 16-year-olds from privileged, culturally elite, miserably broken families.
Pot luck
Pineapple Express is the movie Knocked Up might have been had it not copped out.
Beyond therapy
This is the stoner comedy that might make people take adolescence — and getting stoned — seriously again.
RV
Even diehard Robin Williams may balk at his new family comedy — as put-upon nice guy Bob Munro, he’s cringe-inducingly awful.
Imagine Me & You
Ol Parker tries to do something new with this romantic comedy, but the script, which he also wrote, is as unimaginative as his characters.
Review: Jennifer's Body
You are no doubt approaching Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody's new venture into horror comedy with gritted teeth, expecting the cinematic equivalent of being bludgeoned into a bloody pulp by an adorable novelty hamburger phone spewing snappy quips out of its receiver.

GEORGE PELECANOS'S SPERO FALLS SHORT
| August 24, 2011
Better than almost any current writer, Pelecanos has shown what city dwellers have known for years: that it is urban neighborhoods, and not suburbs, where what we think of as the small-town values of community and knowing your neighbors have taken root.
