The Donnas do what the Donnas do, and, hard as it may be to believe, they’ve been doing it for more than a decade. Call it a stripped-down, garage-punked take on early Kiss/Mötley Crüe glam metal, delivered with a hefty dose of smokin’-in-the-boys’-room attitude. The Donnas’ coming-out party, 1998’s
American Rock ’n’ Roll Machine
(Lookout!), has been a tough act for them to follow, even as they emerged on a major label in 2002. (Atlantic backed the foursome for two albums.) Now returned to their own Purple Feather label, the band haven’t changed their bad-grrrl rock-and-roll-queenie approach (“I want it bad/I want it now” sings Brett Anderson in “Wasted,” a song based on the old love-is-a-drug cliché) so much as they’ve refined it. And refinement is a double-edged sword. Early on, there was something appealing about the Donnas’ raw, teasing, tongue-in-cheek take on boy rock and their rudimentary arena-rock riffage. Seven albums later, guitarist Allison Robertson’s leads may be more polished, and flamboyant embellishments like the “Love Gun” snare salvos that kick off the disc’s title track may be tighter, but it feels as if the band’s loose, party-hearty excitement had run its course. Indeed, they seem in a rush to get through
Bitchin’
: each track rams into the next, like a desperate football team running a hurry-up offense with no time-outs. The Donnas get the ball into the red zone from time to time on
Bitchin’
, but they never really score.

Review: Hot Tub Time Machine
Steve Pink has a big chubby for the ’80s.
Flashbacks: June 30, 2006
These selections, culled from our back files, were compiled by Whitney Kimball and Hannah Van-Susteren.
The final four
From Yiddish speed-rhymes to Latin funk, the 2010 Rock Hunt finals once again delivered a musically diverse and thoroughly-entertaining show at Lupo’s last Saturday.
Mommy, what's with Michael?
" After I got HIStory , I played it incessantly. It was the greatest, strangest, angriest, most bizarre thing I ever heard. Michael Jackson is this iconic persona..."
Players only
Jessica Smith has spent years booking death-metal shows around Boston. On top of loads of meat-and-potatoes nights at O'Brien's in Allston and Dee Dee's in Quincy, two of her shows — Origin and Malevolent Creation — actually sold out the Middle East upstairs.
Ke$ha | Animal
If balancing adolescent stupidity and abandon with effortless hooks has been a sacred rite of pop music since time immemorial, then crunk-pop diva Ke$ha is on her way to priesthood.
The Big Hurt: Liam alone
Everyone figured that Noel Gallagher would go solo — it’s been hinted at for years — but the break-up of Oasis has made it a grim inevitability.
The Big Hurt: Vince Neil acts his age
By the time you read this, the Situation will have his first single out on iTunes. Yeah, that the Situation.
Rhody loves Chachi
Get to know Charlie “Big Chachi” Carvalho for about five minutes and it’s clear he’s equal parts confident and cordial, a down-to-earth family man with big aspirations.
Monster Mosh
The intensity level may have been a hair tamer last Friday at the ICC in Allston — an unassuming DIY venue in a church's function hall — but Halloween gave the night a twist.
Lady Gaga | The Fame
GaGa ups the ante in terms of catchy songwriting and sheer high-in-the-club-banging-to-the-beat abandon.

SEND IN THE CLOWNS
| July 02, 2009
The New York Post got to resurrect its priceless "Wacko Jacko" headline. Barbara Walters scored Super Bowl-level ratings without having to lift a pretty little finger. And Michael Jackson, well, no matter how you slice it, he got screwed royally.
ARRESTING DEVELOPMENTS
| September 16, 2008
Lack of talent, charisma, and/or personality can prevent a good band from achieving greatness — but too much of a good thing can also be a problem.
ROCK THERAPIES
| July 22, 2008
A little over four years ago, the Boston music scene lost one of its cuter couples when singer-songwriter Blake Hazard and guitarist/producer John Dragonetti left town for LA.
FORTUNATE ONE

It was no surprise to find Chris Brokaw in Hawaii last week, just two Saturdays before he’s due back in Cambridge to pull a double shift upstairs at the Middle East.

The New Year, a band the Kadanes started with Chris Brokaw on drums a decade ago, are still a going concern.
