VEE-JAY: THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION

What pioneering American indie label issued records by both the Beatles and John Lee Hooker? If you answered Vee-Jay, you still need this box set of 86 songs that are part of the foundation of rock and roll. Because of licensing issues, Vee-Jay’s Beatles stuff ain’t here — but you’ve heard all that anyway. What’s left is a stunningly upbeat, joyful collection of classic R&B and gospel by historic figures like Hooker, the Staple Singes, Jerry Butler, Jimmy Reed, Hank Ballard, and the Mighty Clouds of Joy, plus obscure killer numbers like Eddie Taylor’s “Bad Boy” and Hoyt Axton’s “Bring Your Lovin.’ ” How about the original “Tainted Love” by Gloria Jones and Betty Everett’s 1963 blueprint for Linda Ronstadt’s 1974 hit “You’re No Good”? Some of this set’s acts, like Butler, Gladys Knight, and the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, are still going strong. Others, like the Highway QC’s and the Dukays, are long gone. But every one of these tunes still burns with life.

Loose Ends
It’s four in the morning and raining. I’m 27 today, feeling old, listening to my records, and remembering that things were different a decade ago.
Live To Tell
Two-thousand-six was a black year for blues.
Interview: Steve Swallow on the Gary Burton Quartet
DO YOU REMEMBER EXACTLY HOW YOU GUYS FIRST GOT TOGETHER? I have a memory. I tend to distrust them, but my recollection is that I met Gary when he called me up and asked me if I would consider playing in Stan Getz's band, which he was already in.
It Does Come Easy
Ringo Starr was the best artist in the Beatles. And, I believe, the best artist to appear on Shining Time Station too. (Sorry, George Carlin.) It feels really weird to say, but it's the undisputable conclusion I drew from seeing "Ringo Starr — Artist" at Chabot Fine Art Gallery (379 Atwells Avenue, Providence, through June 27).
Sexiest video-game studs of 2009
Video-game characters get more realistic all the time - and by more realistic, we mean sexier. This year offered a plethora of digital delights and graphical innovations, and although developers don't cater to their straight female and gay male audience nearly as much as they could, we still had no shortage of contenders for this list.
Motley crews
The history of Boston rock and roll begins with these immortal words: “Ding! Dong! Ding ding dong! Ka-ding dong, ding dong ding!”

This steaming pile of songs is emblematic of the state of mainstream country music — all artifice, no heart, calculated anthems written to formula and meant, like the film itself, to do no more than capitalize on the genre's current success and rob its undiscriminating fans.
