KENNY CHESNEY, JUST WHO I AM: POETS AND PIRATES

Stars
Kenny Chesney has built his sizeable country empire on selling Jimmy Buffett–like beach fantasies with guitar-fueled mid-tempo frat rock.
Just Who I Am
offers more of the same, even as it finds Chesney in a contemplative mood. The best of the bunch is “Shiftwork,” a light, calypso-flavored duet with George Strait that’s easily the breeziest Chesney song since “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy.” Most of the rest is inert, with the exception of the ballad “Wife and Kids,” which hinges on the chorus “Maybe someday I’ll have a wife and kids.” Chesney belts out that lyric, and for a celeb who went through a brief and notorious marriage with Renée Zellweger, it’s a rather amazing confession. Regardless of what you think you know about the country star, “Wife and Kids” will make you think twice and maybe even, for just a moment, feel for the guy.

Massachusetts: You might be living in a red state if
Scott Brown’s Senatorial victory is merely the latest sign that red tides are creeping upon our once-progressive Commonwealth. Don’t believe us? Consider that Kenny Chesney sells out Gillette Stadium every summer, and, of course, that wealthy Republican presidential hopeful with the fantastic hair was recently our Governor.
On their way to Memphis
Their name sort of gives them away.
The Avett Brothers
In country music, blood ties evoke an era — the days of the Carter Family, the Monroe Brothers — when making music in the parlor was everyday entertainment. Comprising Avett siblings Scott and Seth plus Bob Crawford, this trio tap into that association via stripped-down instrumentation (guitar, banjo, upright bass), spirited vocal harmonies, and rustic yet contemporary originals.

They once seemed capable of much more.
Citadel of sound
Before the digital universe expanded, serious home recording was just a dream.

Review: Castanets | Texas Rose, the Thaw and the Beasts
Although based in a rustic, country-western sound, Ray Raposa's Castanets are irreverent, using familiar elements like pedal-steel guitars and gospel choruses in defiant ways.
Missionary man
Parsons’s influence is pervasive, from the Stones to Elvis Costello, Uncle Tupelo, and Wilco.
Backwoods Barbie
Dolly Parton should run for president.
