SHAGGY, INTOXICATION

Stars
Even though he’s sold some 20 million albums, labels have kept Shaggy on a short leash over the years. Not too long after his first American smash hit, “Boombastic,” Virgin dropped him, and despite back-to-back charttoppers at the beginning of the decade — “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel” — things didn’t work out with Geffen, either. And so the Kingston-born reggae/pop singer’s latest effort is out on Queens indie VP Records, with no big-name production or guest rap credits other than Akon. Nonetheless, it should appeal to American and international fans alike. From “Intoxication” (a tale of sexual regret) to “Church Heathen” (about hypocrisy in the church), the lyrics are more stimulating than your typical dancehall fare, and the beats are elegant and catchy. The first single, “Bonafide Girl,” with his “It Wasn’t Me” collaborator Rik Rok, is as sweet and seductive as anything Shaggy’s done.

Snoop Dogg
That Snoop has made his best album since 1993’s Doggystyle is a painful reminder that the hip-hop ambassador has spent the majority of his career coasting.

Fabolous
Maybe he should spend less time spelling out his name.
From ’Ye to mixtapes
To get the full taste of where hip-hop is at, you also have to seek out the unofficial releases, the mixtapes, which often have a bigger impact than the official albums.
Mirror ball
The stirring pop hits of the day can’t help but reflect the refracting cracked mirror of our nation’s increasingly emotion-laden psyche.
Epic Win
It never seemed possible, but metal is finally getting comfortable with indie-rock proportions. What once required enormous stages with catwalks and hyperactive spark machines now really needs only kids throwing all-ages shows in basements. It's a bit more modest an existence — nobler, somehow. Nerdier, even.
Beatfest
If them old changing-weather blues got you longing to twist again like you did last summer, just download some of these dance-floor alternatives (suitable for headphone listening) and let your toes do the tapping.
Explicitly yours
The easiest way out with R. Kelly — as with Bill Clinton or Paris Hilton — is sex jokes.
