One of the most world-traveled house DJs, Kleinenberg on this two-CD set manages to vary the tempo, the mood, the melody — pretty much every attribute — of his music without sacrificing any of its signatures. There’s something here for just about every house locus, and if his sound feels a bit too polished, there’s nothing by-the-book about it. Kleinenberg used to favor ornamentation, flamboyance, vocals, but none of that plays much part here. The set is divided into “Left” and “Right” CDs, the first being a gentle, gliding hour of lounge-style house, the second a trippier hour of variations on classic space disco featuring well-known names from the world of trance and techno: a Dubfire remix of Christian Smith & John Selway’s “Transit Time”; “Remember” by Bushwacka!; a Bushwacka! remix of Blake & Monroe’s “Summer’s Gate.” On the “Left” CD there’s also a 16 Bit Lolitas remix of OHMNA’s “Police Squid” and a Gui Boratto track, “Beautiful Life.” Mostly, however, Kleinenberg’s 28 selections were made by names not well known — the classic strategy by which a DJ projects his own sound, one unmistakable for anyone else’s.
