Offer Nissim

FIRST TIME | Star 69

BRASH AND LOUD: But Maya brings the soul to Nissim's buzzsaw.Israel’s #1 DJ makes his US debut on DJ Peter Rauhofer’s Star 69 imprint. Nissim’s style is techno, brash and buzz-sawing, loud and yet melodic, even endearing, thanks to soulful, Euro-style vocals by Maya, one of Israel’s premier pop singers. Like so many pop music craftsmen (including the makers of t.A.t.U.) from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and points beyond, he owes a lot to French variété queen Mylene Farmer: all of his atmospherics, at least half of his vocal arrangements for Maya, and several long quotes. (His “Intro,” “Rain,” and much of “That’s the Way I Like It” replay the music of Farmer’s 1988–1995 goth period.) Yet atmospherics, vocal radiance, and goth glimmer help illuminate, rather than becloud, his world of racy fantasy. With big Italo-disco beats, melodics, vocal hooks, synthesizers, and more synthesizers, he tosses fans a glitzy, fast-paced, harlequin life full of candy treats and always joyous to the max — a kind of secular-world Hassidism that surely clicks with his Israeli children.
