TORCHE, MEANDERTHAL

Since metal is a world created by male dorks, it has to be the most excessively sub-categorized genre of music ever. But there are really only two kinds of metal: the kind with comprehensible riffs (
e.g.
, Sabbath), and the kind with incomprehensible riffs that are just blurs (like, say, Dillinger Escape Plan). These days, anything in the first category tends to be labeled “stoner” — as Florida’s Torche often are — since comprehensibility is not usually considered a very “metal” thing. Fuck that. Here’s an odd adjective to describe the sound of the new Torche: “sunny.” Does it have brutal palm-muted frettage and brain-detonating drum barrages? Yes it does, among the stacked vocal harmonies, Wipers-esque psychedelia, and Jesus Lizardish bass lurches. Don’t let the dizzying flurry of Rush-meets-Lightning-Bolt album opener “Triumph of Venus” fool you into thinking that this is the work of wink-wink nudge-nudge metallers. Amid a sea of sword-wielding D&D ironists, Torche seem to be quietly resurrecting the earnest-minded heaviness of mid-’90s post-“grunge” — you know, bands with one-word names and blurry-photo album covers like Quicksand. If this all sounds conflicting and contradictory in theory, it isn’t in practice, and it’s all over way too quickly anyway.

Dear ‘girlfriend metal’: Fuck you and the Facebook page you rode in on
I had no idea that the term "girlfriend metal" was used anywhere outside my immediate circle of snarky, elitist Brooklyn-based friends.

Goth vs. skronk
The variation in sonic textures seemed not to matter much -- most likely, it was the point -- and an enthusiastic crowd packed the floor, surfing and slamming to both bands as best they could. AFI, Dillinger Escape Plan, and Nightmare Of You at Avalon, June 20, 2006

Some of us are just better off not shaking it in public. So here are a few recurring options for rad nights of music that require not an ounce of dance mojo on your part.

RAZORMAZE ADDS FOCUS TO THEIR THRASH
| May 15, 2012
For a kind-of goofy metal dude, Alex Citrone is pretty serious — especially when he talks metal, and especially when he's talking about his band, Boston shred titans Razormaze.
ZAMBRI | HOUSE OF BAASA
| May 15, 2012
For those of us of a certain age who remember when school dances had a strict four-fast-songs-then-one-slow-one policy, the memory of bouncing around to "Let's Hear It for the Boy" with the anticipation of "One More Night" or "Take My Breath Away" still makes our palms sweat with hormonal anxiety.
CONFRONTING THE SWEDISH GLOOM OF IN SOLITUDE
| May 08, 2012
When I am finally able to get through to the cell phone of In Solitude's tour manager, they have emerged from a massive dust cloud, their metal-mobile finding civilization after a long spell traversing the deserts of Arizona with no idea where they are going.
[R.I.P.] ADAM YAUCH AND THE BEASTIE BOYS
| May 08, 2012
ADAM YAUCH, a/k/a MCA, was likely inspired to pen those words, that appear in a tossed off couplet in the middle of what would wind up being one of the band’s final singles, by his immersion in the world of illness.
INTERVIEW: SIMON REYNOLDS TRIES TO LOOK FORWARD
| April 24, 2012
Quick, try to think of futuristic music that has nothing to do with the music of the past. Can't do it?
