Stars
The Replacements have a well-chronicled history of sabotaging their own rock stardom. When the Minneapolis-based proto-alt-rockers weren’t deliberately scaring off major label representatives with reckless performances, they were finding more clever ways to depreciate themselves. (See
The Replacements Stink
EP.) So leave it to the ’Mats to cut some truly great material from their albums. Included among the 30 studio outtakes, rarities, and demos spread over these four Twin/Tone reissues: on
Sorry Ma
, the original demo tape given to Twin/Tone co-founder Peter Jesperson (who after one listen remarked, “I thought my head was going to explode”); on the hardcore-punk-tinged
Stink
, a speed-punk rendition of the ’50s Bill Haley hit “Rock Around the Clock”; and on
Hootenanny
’s “Bad Worker,” frontman Paul Westerberg reflecting on his pre-’Mats days as a janitor. But it’s the
Let It Be
extras that shine. “Perfectly Lethal,” an outtake that could have been a college-radio hit, and a demo version of “Answering Machine,” the tale of a failed drunk dial as told to a four-track recorder (without the annoying operator voice in the background), attest to Westerberg’s knack for spinning both beautiful songwriting and drunken idiocy — in other words, what made the ’Mats so damn loveable.

The week in boners
With his new album expected to hit #1 on the Billboard charts this week, I think (Nasty) Nas is getting a bit swell-headed.
The Replacements
The Replacements have always been blessed with impeccably bad timing. The Replacements, "I Will Dare" (mp3) The Replacements, "Unsatisfied" (mp3)
Replacements | Rhino Reissues
Rhino’s second and concluding batch of Replacements reissues charts the Minneapolis band’s Great Descent from the heights of rock-and-roll nihilism to the pit of MOR blah.
Boston music news: September 5, 2008
I’m not one to gossip, so you didn’t hear it from me, but . . .
Turn the beat around
I do a lot of thinking about music. Coincidentally or not, I have a lot of friends who don’t, but get a kick out of the fact that I do.
Revving it up
The Wrong Reasons have mustered a gallant comeback, and this time it’s for all the right reasons.
Sound samples
Spinning the local music CD lazy susan has turned up some pretty cool surprises.
Fresh tracks
It’s a big deal when Someday Providence gets new music out. Their new EP extends the band’s dedication to breezy pop, but also adds depth, dimension, and a wee bit of heaviness.
Still waters
On record, Toronto’s Great Lake Swimmers trot between the countrified rock of the Cowboy Junkies and the somber folk of latter-day Neil Young.
Celebration of sound
Despite living in a world that is seemingly rotating off its axis and just plain miserable, there are, believe it or not, many reasons to give thanks.
Original Sinner
I met Joan Jett because of Lisa King. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen the way it was supposed to. Joan Jett, "A.C.D.C." (QuickTime)

REVIEW: FANFARLO AT T.T. THE BEAR'S
| December 22, 2009
I wasn't expecting much from London indie-pop band Fanfarlo at T.T.the Bear's last Thursday evening. For the passed month, I had a live performance of theirs bouncing around my iPod, which I downloaded only because I thought their name was cool.
REVIEW: THE WALKMEN AT MIDDLE EAST
| September 23, 2009
It was strange to see the sparse instrumentation from which NYC’s The Walkmen drew their atmospheric, honey-dipped sound last Friday at the Middle East.
