Last time our paths crossed, Mike Resist had consumed more than 30 Jello shots. One could argue that this was a bad choice, but I would respectfully disagree — he has ample cause for celebration. Eight months isn’t supposed to be enough time to go from opening matinees at the Midway to having, like, plenty of real live humans come to your shows. Through some cocktail of perseverance, market savvy, and mayhem, Refuse Resist have accomplished the improbable. They’re also the only hardcore band I’ve seen inspire impromptu go-go dancing. With almost every song making its point and ending in well under three minutes,
Mind: Yourself
isn’t out to waste anyone’s time, and it doesn’t aspire to anything beyond fast, gnarly rage chow à la Minor Threat and Agnostic Front and maybe Trouble. It’s a splendid ambiance for those occasions when every single piece of furniture in the room must be destroyed. The fastidious clamor emanating from Shawn Refuse’s soundhole is evocative of a truly nonplussed Cookie Monster, and this is a wondrous thing. Here’s hoping the Red Sox replace “Tessie” with “Still in Massachusetts” as their anthem next time they take the World Series, if only for its chorus: “Why am I still in Massachusetts?! State that I love and I haaaaate!”

Better late than ever
The eternal argument over what is and is not punk rock has been run into the ground for so long, it’s become a cliché — and clichés are so not punk.
For the benefit of vegan awareness and a princess
Kick off the weekend THURSDAY (the 17th) with a recession-friendly evening with local legend MARK CUTLER & FRIENDS at the Greenwich Hotel (401.884.4200), 21+ and no cover.
Cellars by strobe light
The ensuing batshit hysteria of this gathering was probably as close as one can realistically and safely get to a temporary autonomous zone.
Quiet riot
I'm sick and tired of music bossing everybody around.
Future perfect
If you stood close to the stage, your torso bones rattled along with the backbeat.
2008 Rock N' Roll Rumble
No villain would’ve scripted a well-deserved victory for honky-tonky good ol’ boys Girls Guns & Glory.
Soup to completely nuts
I half-expected Rise Against to play their obligatory hits for 20 minutes and say “goodnight”; instead, they tore it up for well over an hour.
Dark matter
To paraphrase some wisdom from Jake "The Snake" Roberts, if a man has power, he never has to raise his voice. Jake was explaining why, unlike his adversaries, he didn't keep screaming gibberish. But it's a universal truth.
O’Death | Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin
O’Death, from the rural backwater town of New York City, are a little bit country and a lot more calamitous power-folk.
Save yourselves
The media-propagated notion that the Canadian sextet Fucked Up are "saving hardcore" seems silly.
In and out of fashion
Something felt eerie about scruffy, squirrelly Rhode Island trio Deer Tick as they entertained the bleep out of the densely occupied VFW.

OUT: AN ELECTRONIC SÉANCE WITH HOORAY FOR EARTH AND ZAMBRI AT GREAT SCOTT
| May 23, 2012
We in Boston enjoy reminding others that Hooray for Earth originally formed here, so we can still call them a Boston band.
GRASS WIDOW | INTERNAL LOGIC
| May 22, 2012
There is stuff not to like about Internal Logic: a pair of instrumental interludes probably don't need to be there, and the drums aren't as gleefully chaotic as they were on 2010's Past Time.
THE PUNK BUSINESS PLAN OF COCK SPARRER
| May 15, 2012
If you play in, work with, or write about bands, you've doubtlessly listened to dozens of wheeler-and-dealers pitch purportedly clever plans to "make it" in the music biz.
CATCHING UP WITH THE WORLD OF DOM
| May 11, 2012
In many respects, the much-ballyhooed demise of the so-called "rock star" is a real thing.

| May 02, 2012
These days, being a nerd is more likely to get you laid than beaten up.
