Singer-songwriter David Berman’s somewhat random decision to name his outfit Silver Jews in the early ’90s ensured that they would never find favor among massive numbers of fans. Berman’s aversion to performing live didn’t help. All the same, Silver Jews built a sizable following for their literate indie-rock recordings. But then, more than a dozen years into the band, a funny thing happened: Judaism found David Berman. He decided to tour the 2006 incarnation (which includes his wife, Cassie, on bass), and to include stops in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on the itinerary.
Silver Jew
, Michael Tully’s 52-minute home movie/documentary, follows the band as they schlep around Israel touring, shopping, and playing a handful of gigs. “This thing that had been a millstone around my neck was actually my ticket out of my hellhole life,” says Berman, who admits to having overcome a drinking problem. But though it’s clear he was moved by his experiences in the Holy Land, his deadpan delivery and changeless expression can make it difficult to tell. It’s not till he reaches the Wailing Wall, dons tefillin, and recites a prayer that a genuine display of emotion cracks through, in the form of a sob.

Silver Jews
Wry, witty, and weird, this not-quite-coherent set of songs is a more freewheeling tour of lead singer David Berman’s increasingly playful lyrical sensibilities.
Quitters, tinklers, tacklers, and whoppers
David Berman of Silver Jews intends to quit the music biz and concentrate on writing prose, says a post on the Drag City Web site.
Rare, please!
The Internet and all it represents has never struck me as fitting very well into the faux Appalachian, outsider-artist æsthetic that Will Oldham has cultivated for himself in his various Palace incarnations and, of late, as Bonnie “Prince” Billy.
Worth the gamble?
Just three years after Rhode Island voters killed plans for a full-scale, Vegas-style casino, big-time gambling is in the cards again.
Fact and fiction . . .
Of the 16 narrative films on deck this year at the Newport International Film Festival, several could be termed “coming-of-age.”
Becoming Berman - side
Becoming Berman
After a weekend in NYC, the Silver Jews hit Cambridge Sunday afternoon on a tour in support of Tanglewood Numbers (Drag City), their fifth album in 12 years.
Hoot and challah
Watching Berman on stage, you couldn’t be sure. Is he into it? Does he like this?

| March 17, 2011
The new New York Dolls have now been around longer - and released more albums (three) - than the old New York Dolls, and they're commemorating that new longevity by letting go of any compulsion they may have still harbored to honor their designation as "punk-rock progenitors."
