He started writing and, with some friends, playing several shows a week at the Grow Room in Providence. His fan base around town swelled into a full-on following outside New England. They recently toured with former Drive-By Trucker Jason Isbell and his new band, the 400 Unit — McCauley describes it as “the most interestingly fun tour I have been on.” After a brief stopover and a few one-off gigs — like the one they’ll play at Harpers Ferry next Thursday — they’re slated to head back out on the road, this time in support of Jenny Lewis.
All of this should ensure that Deer Tick will get noticed for more than being just another animal band. Not that McCauley was especially upset when he first heard about Deerhunter or Deerhoof after he had already settled on his own name; he likes “Deer Tick” too much for that. “If this band breaks up, I have no idea how I’m going to top this band name.”

The last time Deer Tick were in Portland, at SPACE Gallery in November 2007, then-21-year-old frontman John McCauley decided to sing the national anthem. He sprung offstage and hit the floor belting the Tony Bennett standard "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" in a nasal voice soaked in equal parts whiskey, battery acid, and gravel.

It is, of course, difficult to attach a single sound to a city. And Providence is no exception.
- Practice makes precious
After seeing her do her thing at the House of Blues on Wednesday, I think I can safely conclude that something about Jenny Lewis just doesn’t do it for me.
