Work the weekend

Off the Couch
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  November 23, 2009

Check out resident surf-thrashers CLIFFS AND BANGERS along with acclaimed Boston act THE WANDAS free of charge at Jimmy's Saloon (401.846.5121) in Newport on Thanksgiving Eve (the 25th). Take the Lions and Giants in the two-game teaser on Thanksgiving, spend the winnings in Wrentham at 3 am, then settle in with the kids on Black FRIDAY (the 27th) at Firehouse 13 for Kids Night with former Big Nazo puppetmaster and current Superchief Trio maestro KEITH MUNSLOW; we're talking balloon animals, face painting, crafts, and plenty of Munslow's antics behind the piano ideal for ages K-6. The festivities kick off at 7 pm and admission is $5 (401.270.1801). Or get to AS220 (401.831.9327) for Eric Baylies's pummeling new project BAD MOTHERFUCKER. The trio head to Cali soon to record a full-length, and a new Baylies Band disc is available now via 75orLess Records. BACKWASH continue their reunion mini-tour at the Ocean Mist (401.782.3740) on SATURDAY (the 28th) with alt-pop locals MINKY STARSHINE, DOPEY LOPES, and another reunion in fellow punk-pop luminaries THAT'LL LEARN YA. Also down south, the Knickerbocker in Westerly hosts ROOMFUL OF BLUES (401.596.4225), and Lincoln's STALEMATE (releasing their debut soon) will play a hometown show at Antonio's Cafe (401.724.6007). Looking forward to another lively Saturday at the Common Pub in Bristol, once again delivering COMA COMA and SIX STAR GENERAL (new album Take Your Teeth Out due December 10), with THE DIEPODS first to thrown down around 10 pm and no cover all night. FYI: the diePods' new debut is a beast. And the Hi-Hat Lounge helps rid the midweek blahs in a big way: on TUESDAY (the 1st) it's ELVIS PERKINS IN DEARLAND with Raleigh NC's BOWERBIRDS, and on WEDNESDAY (the 2nd), Ian Lacombe and his rousing ROUTE .44 crew play musical host to the "burlesque zeitgeist" known as "Slutcracker Sketchy." Nice. Doors at 6:30 pm with a $10 cover. Call 401.453.6500 for details on both.
