WILLIAM J. MURPHYFor awhile there, it looked like the General Assembly might do the right thing this year and pass legislation curbing the predatory practices of "payday lenders," who lure the working poor onto debt treadmills. But the bill died at the end of the session.
Legislative leaders deserve much of the blame, but they've already been turkeyfied for other transgressions. Here, we give the gobble to former Speaker of the House-turned-lobbyist William J. Murphy, who was paid a cool $50,000 by Advance America, one of the nation's largest payday lending firms, to squash the measure.
