TRIBUTE TO THE MAESTRO

Roots Cultural Center on Westminster Street in downtown Providence will be featuring a tribute to the late, great Pandit Ravi Shankar on Saturday, December 22, at 6 pm. Roots has made a point of showcasing a wide variety of music from all over the world and this event is in keeping with that mission.

It is not often that one gets to hear master Indian musicians. Srinivas Reddy will play the sitar accompanied by Ajit Acharya on tabla. Thanks to Mr. Shankar and disciples such as the late George Harrison, many Americans were exposed to this beautiful and haunting music back in the 1960s and early '70s.

This is a great opportunity to hear it again.

Though he spent a stint as executive director of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation under Governor Lincoln "Missing Linc" Almond, Marcel Valois — the newly named head ramrod of the beleaguered EDC — is hardly a household name in The Biggest Little. (Unless, of course, you live in a household with a lot of people named Marcel or Valois.)
