Gospel music in Newport
The noted attorney and music aficionado, Casby Harrison, alerted your superior correspondents to a truly inspiring event taking place in Newport on Sunday, July 21: the Gospel Brunch at the Doris Duke Mansion in Newport.
“One of the many idiosyncrasies of Doris Duke is that she loved gospel music,” Casby explains. “So much so, that she offered to pay a black gospel choir director in New Jersey to give her private lessons. The gospel director told her the only way she could get him to teach her was if she rehearsed with the choir he was directing.
“She did sing with that black New Jersey choir for 10 years,” he continues. “Frequently she wore a blonde afro wig along with the choir robes, to throw off the paparazzi. I am told that photos of Doris Duke wearing the afro wig are on display at the mansion and that Doris Duke financed the recording of the James Cleveland Gospel Choir’s rendition of Amazing Grace and Peace Be Still.”
The folks who run Duke’s mansion have, according to Casby, reached out to the Providence based RPM Gospel Choir to perform at the mansion. There will be an elaborate brunch beginning at 1 pm with a gospel concert beginning on the lawn of the mansion at 3.
Lawn chairs can be reserved or you can bring your own chairs and/or blanket for a lesser price. The mansion will also be open for tours that will be included in the price of the concert. Tickets can be obtained by calling 401.846.4152 or going online to newportrestoration.org.
South County Film Festival on hold
Last week we announced the date for the South County Film Festival, but, a few days ago, we received this message from the festival folks: “Due to an unfortunate glitch in our ticket selling program we are forced to postpone the South County Film Festival which was slated for this Friday, July 19 at Ninigret Park in Charlestown Rhode Island. As soon as we have this issue resolved we will announce the new rescheduled date. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.”
We continue to look forward to this event and we’ll let you know as soon as a new date has been set.
