DARRELL MARTINIE: 1943–2006
We note the sad passing, on Wednesday, July 26, of Darrell Martinie, better known to millions of radio listeners as the “Cosmic Muffin.” The Muffin had been dispensing his weather-report-style astrological advice for 33 years on Portland’s WBLM alone, ending each report with his tag line, "It's a wise man who rules the stars; it's a fool who's ruled by them. Over and out." The Muffin died of cancer at age 63.

The Cosmic Muffin, who was described in various reports of his death as one of the last blonde, gay, Italian Republicans left on the planet (the only other Republican astrologer we've ever heard of was Joan Quigley, the seer who guided the White House decisions of Ron and Nancy Reagan), leaves behind a husband, Edward Boesel. Muffin and Boesel were the first same-sex couple to obtain a marriage license in Saugus, Massachusetts, where they lived. Ever the Republican, the Muffin invited Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to the ceremony. Romney didn't attend, despite the fact that one of his predecessors, former Governor William Weld, had named Martinie the official astrologer of the Commonwealth in 1993. And where did that nickname originate? From a National Lampoon song called Detroita. The lyric seems fitting now that he's gone.

"Therefore, make your peace with god/Whatever you conceive him to be;/Hairy Thunderer ... or Cosmic Muffin"

Rest in peace, Cosmic Muffin. Over and out.
