Hardball

That’s easy for me to say, obviously, since it’s not my money. But really, consider the current confluence of events. Boston’s infatuation with sports is at an all-time high. The Herald is dwindling away. And the Globe’s sports section is thinner than ever.

Staking the Herald’s continued existence on a beefed-up sports section might seem like an act of desperation. But in the newspaper business in general — and at the imperiled Herald in particular — these are desperate times.
