Don't taze us, we're with the media

As the line between press and protester blurs, more and more reporters are getting cuffed--and worse--as they cover the counterculture
As the Veterans for Peace led marchers into the mayhem of last month's NATO protest in Chicago, photographers and cameramen from major media outlets rode ahead of the pack on a double-decker bus.

Game Change?

A coalition of net natives crossed political lines to decapitate SOPA and PIPA. Is this the beginning of a new American politics?
The bills, designed to choke off online piracy of movies, music, and pharmaceuticals, seemed greased for passage.

Herbal bliss at your doorstep

Breath of a Salesman
You squint through the peephole: your expected visitor appears trustworthy enough, with a tech-chic denim-and-boots look. It's not like he's up to anything too sketchy — just trying to match you with a weed vaporizer fit for your lifestyle — so you invite him in and offer a seat.

Prescription Pothole

For the sick in need of medical marijuana, it looks like the people will have to provide the relief that their representatives won’t
It seems strange to say that politicians lack the courage to pass a bill that's favored by the vast majority of their constituents. But that's where Massachusetts stands on its long, strange trip to legalize distribution of medically prescribed marijuana.

Photos: Tea Party Rally and Counter-Protest at Boston Common

Sunday, April 15th 2012
As the Mass Tea Party Coalition rallied at Boston Common on Sunday, April 15th, a group of approximately 60 activists held a counter-protest. The counter-protest called attention to the Tea Party's anti-gay sentiments, specifically protesting the afternoon's appearances by Scott Lively and Brian Camenker. Rick Santorum was originally scheduled to speak, but did not. Three protesters were arrested.

Occupy Cape Cod is showing the kids that experience pays off

Senior moment
I've seen the future of Occupy. It was wearing sensible beige walking shoes, boots of the non-combat variety, and, in some cases, sweater vests and pressed button-downs.

Hunting the Craigslist Killer

An untold detective story from the digital frontier
Julissa Brisman's 10 pm client, her sixth and last for Tuesday, April 14, 2009, was early. She planned afterward to go out with a Yale graduate she'd met on the train to Boston the previous morning and was due back home in Brooklyn the next day.

I was a teenage Gramlich

How I conquered monetary policy, macroeconomics, and the giggles
I can't say I ever intended from a young age to spend my 18th year mastering Washington Consensus–era monetary policy to recite in stuttering, rote cliché before a panel of mildly curious economic policymakers who filled out the payroll at Alan Greenspan's Randian fiefdom.

Standing their ground

In spite of the Trayvon Martin case, Massachusetts lawmakers are pushing for a controversial law that could promote violence as much as it prevents it
It seems like every decent person in America is scorching over the Trayvon Martin killing.

South By Southwest gets a dose of Occupation

Anonymous wrecks
Even before Occupy protesters rallied on Sixth Street last Friday — bandanas wrapped around their grills, middle fingers raised — you could easily argue that social justice was the centerpiece of South by Southwest 2012.
