In a Kakuro, the little number to the left or top of each row or column tells you the sum of its digits. You can’t repeat any numbers in a row or column, and you can only use the numbers 1–9. See the two-box row in the top left with a small 9 to the left of it? The sum of the numbers in those two boxes will be 9. A row or column ends at a black square, so the two-square row in the upper middle of the grid with a 12 to the left of it may or may not have digits in common with that first row with the 9 next to it; they’re considered different rows because there’s a black square between them. Both numbers in that row can’t be 6, as that would repeat digits. Down columns work the same way.
