Robyn Hitchcock, in one of many illuminating moments of reflection during this 53-minute documentary, posits that his songs “don’t appeal to meatheads.” But then he adds that his music is “not particularly intellectual or pretentious or arty.” It’s taken the British singer-songwriter the better part of his three-decade career to put himself and his work into honest perspective and find the comfort level to open up, but we’re the beneficiaries. John Edginton’s film catches Hitchcock in the process of creating his sharpest set of songs in years, 2006’s

, both in rehearsals and on tour with his makeshift band Venus 3 — whose line-up includes R.E.M.’s Peter Buck vacationing from his day job. Collaborators like Led Zep’s John Paul Jones and singer Gillian Welch weigh in on why Hitchcock remains so underappreciated, a sentiment borne out by live footage of him running through older tunes like “My Wife and My Dead Wife” and “Queen Elvis.”

Reality bites
At some point or another, the greatest artists are pegged as oddballs, weirdos, freaks. Being a great artist does mean going out on a limb.
Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3
The wonder of Robyn Hitchcock isn’t so much that he can write a line like “Fuck me baby, I’m a trolley bus” as that he can use it in a way that makes emotional sense.

Joan Armatrading | This Charming Life
Joan Armatrading’s previous album just didn’t feel right. This Charming Life is more like it.
Tom Waits | Glitter and Doom Live
Arriving five years after his last release of new material, and two after the three-disc Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards box of outtakes and oddities, this live set culled from assorted 2008 gigs could be seen as a time marker.
Miles Davis | The Complete Columbia Album Collection
Given the consensus that the CD era is drawing to a close, labels have begun to look increasingly toward the well-heeled — those who not only still buy their music on something they can hold but aren't averse to buying it in supersized, extravagant configurations they can show off and savor.
Silver Jew | Drag City DVD
Michael Tully’s 52-minute home movie/documentary follows the band as they schlep around Israel touring, shopping, and playing a handful of gigs.
In action
In the era of YouTube, we’re apt to forget that not every note of music ever played has been captured on film or video.
