Uninformed brilliance

Or maybe you heard about his infamous "Philly Rant," as it's known (with 700,000 hits on YouTube), where Burr turned on a surly crowd of 10,000 during an Opie and Anthony traveling comedy tour, decimating them with vicious attacks on the city's heroes, including the Flyers ("They haven't won since Gerald Ford was in office, bunch of pussies"), Ben Franklin, and Rocky Balboa, dropping approximately 127 F-bombs in 12 minutes (bloggers have transcribed the rant) and repeatedly reminding the crowd of his time left on stage: "By the way, my CD is for sale after the show. Fuck you, sir. Four minutes left!" By the end of his set, Burr had somehow — but not surprisingly — won over the drunken crowd, with the majority giving Burr a standing ovation. He was swarmed at his merch booth following the set.

"I just do my thing, people know what to expect at this point," Burr told me. "There may be some groans in that first few minutes, but once the crowd realizes what's going on and they say, 'Hey, this guy just doesn't give a shit,' everyone gets onboard and goes along for the ride."

The new EP by PVD trio Gertrude Atherton, Isle of Lost Skulls , is a gnarled beauty of a debut and proves to be well worth the wait. I have been eagerly anticipating this record since catching drummer Melanie Fuest, singer/guitarist Shannon Le Corre, and bassist Nicole Lagace in action a dozen or so times over the past year.
