SOLO EXPLORATIONIf reading, for you, is more of a solitary pursuit, allow me to throw in a quick plug for Danielle Evans’s BEFORE YOU SUFFOCATE YOUR OWN FOOL SELF (Riverhead). Unfortunately Evans has no events planned in New England (yet). But, simply put: her debut collection of stories, which explore race and class and family and femininity and love from strong points of view and in deceptively simple prose, are some of the best I’ve read in years. They stick with you and they’re the best of the season.
