Fall Books Preview: Reading list

By DEIRDRE FULTON  |  September 15, 2010

Deborah Krasner | October 30
You’ve read and heard enough to know that meat is an eco-minefield — that "grass-fed" or "free-range" or "organic" meat is better than the large-scale feedlot crap — but you don’t know how to take the next steps: how to find it, what to do with it once you have it in your kitchen. That’s where Krasner’s GOOD MEAT (Stewart, Tabori & Chang) comes in. The Vermont author and James Beard Award winner has written the go-to cookbook and resource guide for the sustainable-meat movement — and is sure to find a receptive audience in Portland.

SOLO EXPLORATION

If reading, for you, is more of a solitary pursuit, allow me to throw in a quick plug for Danielle Evans’s BEFORE YOU SUFFOCATE YOUR OWN FOOL SELF (Riverhead). Unfortunately Evans has no events planned in New England (yet). But, simply put: her debut collection of stories, which explore race and class and family and femininity and love from strong points of view and in deceptively simple prose, are some of the best I’ve read in years. They stick with you and they’re the best of the season.
