Michael Preston begins the show as a master of ceremonies, coaxing the audience into a chorus of "Do re mi" and introducing an invisible Richard Rodgers to make a few remarks. After the curtain goes up, he joins the cast as a sort of stage manager, telescopes his tall frame to become the smallest Trapp child, and, in brownshirt uniform, seduces a prim-looking Elkins on a park bench. I don't know who Elkins is playing then, but the dance is creepily hilarious.
